About Operations Research

PDF Print E-mail

The focus of Operations Research (OR) is the study of systems in which human decision making plays a critical role. OR tools enable people to make effective decisions, whether about system design or operation. OR follows scientific precepts of empirical observation and modeling, combining both analytical thinking and synthesis in an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving. OR is an important part of an industrial engineer's toolset.

The MINDSET curriculum includes these topics from OR:

  • Linear Programming, including min/max problems
  • Integer Programming including Binary 0-1
  • Integer Programming Assignment Problems
  • Multiple Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT)
  • Networking, including CPM/PERT methodology and Shortest Path, Location, and Transportation problems
